Two Harbors : To celebrate our wedding anniversary, we stayed a night at the Lighthouse Bed & Breakfast in Two Harbors, Minnesota. The North Shore of Lake Superior is one of our favorite places, and staying in a functioning lighthouse made it extra fun. Phil, Miranda and Griffin Visit - June 2007 : Phil, Miranda and Griffin arrived 1 June 2007, and stayed with us until the 7th. They then joined Miranda's family, who were in the Northfield area for the graduation of Miranda's brother Tom from Carleton College. During their visit, we had a great time, and saw a number of local attractions. Among Griffin's favorites were several playgrounds and a number of "gackos"!

Pelicans Above : We were out in the back yard on Sunday afternoon (2006-09-03) when Peg pointed out a flock of American white pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) nearly overhead. We have sometimes seen hundreds of them in the Minnesota River Valley National Wildlife Refuge, about a mile west of our home, but we hadn't previously seen them in flight over our neighborhood.

Prairie Garden Restoration : We first planted a small prairie garden in 1979, and expanded it to about a thousand square feet in 1981. (I've included a few 1982 photos of Janice and the garden, for historical perspective.) After about 20 years, the eastern third gradually died back due to shade and competition, mainly from a nearby row of Amur maples. We finally took out the maples in 2004, and cleared the accumulation of weeds and tree seedlings in 2005. In June of 2006 we bought prairie seed from Prairie Restorations and replanted the area on 23 June.

Blue Mounds State Park : On Sunday, August 27th, we decided to make a day trip to the southwestern corner of Minnesota to visit Blue Mounds State Park. We headed down Interstate 35, had breakfast in Albert Lea, and then drove out Interstate 90 to Luverne. The park is just a few miles north of I-90. There is a short video of a bison calf on our .Mac web site.

Sixtieth : On Sunday, 21 September 2008 we joined a family gathering to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of the wedding of Peg's parents. The celebration was a bit late, since the anniversary was actually in late August, but what are a few weeks compared to 60 years? All the children, lots of the grandchildren and a couple of great-grandchildren were there.

Fourth of July, 2009 : Our friends M and C invited us to their lake place for the Fourth of July weekend, and we had a great time. Among other things, we went sailing, scootering and kayaking, but didn't do a lot of photography. Nevertheless, we've selected a few photos to share.

Early Snow : We had significant snowfall today (12 October 2009), so Peg took some pictures to record the event. Two days earlier, temperatures dropped to about 26F and we got just a fraction of an inch of snow, but the chill was enough to cause our green ash trees to drop nearly all their still-green leaves in the course of a single morning.
